Getting icy by the ocean
Redondo Beach. Is there a better way to celebrate the holiday season in Southern California than with ice-skating by the beach? The second annual Seaside Ice Redondo Beach Winter Festival opens with a party from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, followed by public skating from 5 to 9:30 p.m. at Seaside Lagoon, 200 Portofino Way.

Redondo Beach's waterfront ice skating rink will reopen next week for a slightly longer season that packs in more promotions, themed skate nights and community events. It's the second time around for Seaside Ice, and co-owner Scott Williams said he and business partner Tom Kearney spent the off-season coming up with activities designed to draw people back and keep them coming throughout the winter.

Ice beckons at a new seasonal skating rink at the edge of the Pacific Ocean. That's right: There's an ice skating rink just 150 feet from where the waves lap the shore. The appropriately named Seaside Ice debuted Tuesday in Redondo Beach and will be open every day throughout the holidays, including Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day, until Jan. 11.
